The faculty members of Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKÜ) Medical Faculty are treating patients with jaw and facial bone fractures through endoscopic interventions. Jaw and facial bone fractures, which are caused by traffic accidents, falls from heights, and facial trauma, and are typically difficult to treat, are now being treated endoscopically (closed and without scars) at Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Medical Faculty Hospital in collaboration with the Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Clinic and the Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic. This technique, which is only available in a few centers in Turkey, such as in Istanbul, Ankara, and Konya, is a first for the Mediterranean Region. Patients treated with this method can recover without any incision scars and without nerve damage.
A press conference was held at the ALKÜ Rectorate Building regarding the operation. The meeting was attended by ALKÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ekrem Kalan, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Aslan, Medical Faculty Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery Department Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seçkin Aydın Savaş, and Medical Faculty Ear, Nose, and Throat Department Lecturer Gözde Orhan Kubat.
Thanking the professors who performed the endoscopic treatment, Rector Kalan said, “Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Alanya Training and Research Hospital is a joint project of our Medical Faculty and the Ministry of Health. As a young and dynamic hospital, several new studies are being conducted within its framework. Our Medical Faculty is growing stronger by the day, with successful physicians and surgeons joining our team. Today, we are here to share a significant event with you. We have two esteemed doctors with us who will provide valuable insights into the operation they performed. Alanya is a place where motorcycle accidents are frequent, though we wish they never occurred. Our doctors performed an endoscopic surgery with a small, nearly invisible incision, leaving no permanent damage or visible scars on the face. We know that endoscopic applications in plastic surgery are not very common. After Ankara and Istanbul, Konya has emerged as a leader in this field. Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Alanya Training and Research Hospital is the fourth center where this type of endoscopic surgery has been performed, marking a significant milestone. I would like to extend my gratitude to our esteemed Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu for his support. I also thank our Chief Physician, the hospital staff, and particularly the surgeons who performed this operation.”
ALKÜ Medical Faculty Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery Department Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seçkin Aydın Savaş stated, “We frequently encounter facial bone fractures caused by traffic accidents, falls from heights, and facial traumas. To repair some fractures, we often have to make large surgical incisions using open techniques, which can result in large scars, facial nerve paralysis, and eyelid problems. The endoscopic method, using a small camera at the tip of the endoscope, allows us to view and treat the fracture through a small incision inside the mouth or on the skin without the need for large cuts. This week, we successfully treated two patients using the endoscopic method, repairing facial fractures without making any incisions on the face. The various angled endoscopes we used provided visual access to multiple areas. Our next goal is to treat more patients with this method, with the support of our Rector Prof. Dr. Ekrem Kalan, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Aslan, and Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Training and Research Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Lakadamyalı and the hospital administration, making our university and hospital a center for these surgeries.”
ALKÜ Medical Faculty Ear, Nose, and Throat Department Lecturer Dr. Gözde Orhan Kubat said, “Our first patient had fractures in the upper jaw, eye socket floor, and cheekbone. Normally, with open surgery, an incision would be made from the eyelid and the corner of the eye. We repaired the fractures with plates and screws using the endoscopic method through the inside of the mouth. The patient’s eye socket floor was repaired with a bone graft. Post-surgery evaluations showed that the patient’s eye movements were normal. In the second case we treated last week, there were fractures in the midline of the lower jaw and in the subcondylar region, just below where the lower jaw connects with the skull. Normally, an incision would need to be made in front of the ear using the open method. However, with the endoscopic method, we accessed the fracture lines through the inside of the mouth, avoiding any facial scars and preserving the facial nerve. In both patients, we observed that because the fractures were repaired closed, without large incisions through the eyelid or in front of the ear, we minimized swelling, pain, and bruising. There were no issues with eye or mouth movement, and the patients were able to leave the hospital sooner and recover more quickly. The shorter recovery time and preservation of functionality are key advantages of this surgery. We extend our gratitude to Rector Prof. Dr. Ekrem Kalan, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Aslan, Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Training and Research Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Lakadamyalı, and ENT Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Caner Şahin for their support.”
